Parents throughout the world know the importance of establishing a safe sleep routine for their newborn.
In recent years, Mums and Dads fearful of covers slipping over the heads of their littles ones have turned to baby sleeping bags, or a sleep sack as they’re also known.
The garment comes in a variety of togs to ensure baby is warm but does not over heat. It is effectively a blanket that cannot be thrown off. The baby is zipped into the quilted pod so he or she shouldn’t wake feeling cold.
We spoke to Mother-of-two Maria Pedley who runs a baby sleeping bags company. The mumpreneaur tells us why she thinks they should be on the shopping list of expectant parents.
1. Safety -“They’re a really safe thing to use, they stop the covers from going over children’s heads which is an important safety aspect,” said Maria. However, remember to follow the feet to foot rule when putting your baby to sleep, place your baby on their back with their feet to the foot of the crib. Never use any other blankets, sheets or other bedding with a baby sleeping bag and please check on your sleeping baby to ensure they are not overheating.
2. Sleep – Many parents believe the baby sleeping bags help babies to sleep throughout the night. They can’t kick the covers off and they can’t slip over the baby’s head. This ensures your little one is safe doesn’t get cold whilst he or she is dreaming.
3. Tog – a European warmth rating. Depending on the weather or the temperature of your nursery or bedroom you can buy three different togs. 0.5 tog for very high summer or if your baby has a raised temperature, a 1.0 tog for spring into summer and then a 2.5 tog for use during the autumn and winter months.
4. Clothes - Is nightwear still worn? It depends on the temperature of your baby’s room and the tog of the sleeping bag. Most baby sleeping bags companies provide guidelines regarding what to wear.
5. Age advice – Baby sleeping bags can be used up until 36 months. However, latest guidelines suggest newborn babies should not use baby sleeping bags until they reach 10lb in weight.
Please note, health professionals recommend that the ideal room temperature for your baby’s nursery is around 16-20C

Can New Born Babies Use a Baby Sleeping bags and Sacks?
One of the main questions new parents ask themselves when making sure their baby is nice and warm during the night is can my new born baby use this sleep sack during the night? The short answer is some people do let new born babies use a baby sleeping bags but I would suggest waiting till your baby is at least 6 months old.
When you baby is brand new you should be swaddling your baby. There is a manufacture of a hybrid sleep sack called Halo that makes the top half of the baby sleeping bags like a swaddler and the bottom half is loose like baby sleeping bags to keep their feet warm.
The main reason why you want to wait to use a regular baby sleeping bags for a newborn baby is because their head is usually too small and will slide down. This could make the baby sleeping bags come up over their head and possibly suffocate your precious baby or cause something that is caused re-breathing.
This of course could happen at any stage if you use a baby sleeping bags that is incorrectly sized. This is why most manufactures offer different sizes according to age and some to consider the length of your baby.
The last reason to wait 6 months is your baby was used to being held tightly in your uterus and can get scared when his or her hands get loose and possibly strike the head or something like that. This is why it is good to swaddle your baby first, then move to the hybrid sack from Halo then finally transition to the full baby sleeping bags. As always I suggest getting a sleeveless baby sleeping bags to provide better circulation for your little one.
I hope this has answered your questions about new born babies and baby sleeping bags. Remember, safety is of the upmost importance and that is why we take things slow and wait till our babies are fully developed before we move them onto the next stage.
